Clapham
In 1999 Robert Adams was commissioned to redevelop a Budgens superstore in Clapham High Street into a multi use development for Soho Gyms. The brief was to develop the site to include a 10,000.00 square foot fitness gymnasium similar to the one previously completed for the same client in Camden and any other additional uses possible.

After lengthy planning negotiations with the Clapham Planning department a highly successful mixture of uses intensifying the site was granted permission. The approved scheme included a restaurant winebar, a maisonette and a large high street shop. The scheme is a landmark in the Clapham High Street scene. The distinctive curved glass façade visually held in place with two solid “book ends” which form the entrances to the Gym and Flat.

The development as well as being of great architectural quality has been commercially very successful. The shop is a sports shop conveniently serving the Gym clients. The Gym with its distinctive balcony entrance is thriving. The pub is currently a Belgo’s Vodka Bar with the inside exposed for all to see and is popular because it is much less intimidating than traditional venues due to the transparency.
