Project Description

The Glasshouse

Location: Westonbirt, Tetbury
Year: 2015
Client: Peter and Sue Hansen

Adams + Collingwood Architects were commissioned for the design and delivery of this contemporary manor house set within a Grade II listed walled garden in the beautiful Cotswalds countryside.

Our clients, Peter and Sue Hansen, purchased the Grade II listed walled garden which came with planning permission granted for two houses. At the time of purchase the foundations and slab for the two houses were already laid and the steels for the two houses left in a pile on the site (as pictured above). Peter and Sue asked us to redesign the scheme as a single dwelling, but to utilise the existing steel frame. Our revised scheme was completed in 2015 and has been running very successfully as a luxury B&B since then.

The accommodation comprises five en-suite bedrooms, a spacious kitchen and other back of house utilities, a drawing room, library, yoga room and renovated garden. Our contemporary design incorporates the listed garden wall which runs through the building, marrying old and new and making the most of the beautiful setting with a ground floor glass facade. We chose to follow Passivehaus design principles utilising structurally insulated panels (SIPS) within the existing steel frame to deliver an incredibly low energy building with excellent air quality.
